When you buy diamonds, whether it’s for a marriage proposal or for another happy occasion, many questions arise and we’re here to clear things up for you.
Natural diamonds
Diamond is the hardest and most brilliant mineral. Its hardness is 10 on the Mohs scale – the highest hardness of any material in nature. Diamonds are very rare on the surface of the earth because they are formed deep within the earth. Diamonds are mined in underground mines or filtered from rivers.
Kimberley Convention: Many countries in the UN, including Israel, came together to develop the Kimberley Process. Israel was one of the founders of the process, and in 2003 issued the world’s first Kimberley Certificate. This process requires member countries to certify that their diamonds are conflict-free. Currently, over 80 countries are members of the Kimberley Convention, and each country is obligated to trade only with other countries that are also members. Today, 99.8% of diamonds are certified conflict-free and there is much more accountability and transparency in the diamond industry.
1. Diamond weight – CARAT
The value of a diamond is determined according to a large number of criteria, we will present to you the main ones:
The occurrence of diamonds in nature is rare because the process of diamond formation is long and slow and requires the existence of very special minerals and conditions in the bowels of the earth, and therefore the larger the diamond, the more expensive it is.
Diamonds are measured in units of weight called “carats.” The word carat comes from the Greek kratio, meaning carob. In the past, carob seeds were used as a measure of value in trade because each carob seed weighs exactly 0.2 grams. 1 carat = 0.2 grams.
The scale for evaluating diamond color is as follows:
And we at ALMA DIAMONDS, guarantee good diamond color selection and DG visibility.
2. Diamond color – COLOR
Diamonds come from the earth in shades of color. The color is a result of the natural formation of the diamond and never changes. In most jewelry, diamonds are white and they too have shades ranging from transparent white to yellow. The most transparent diamonds are the most valuable.
3. Diamond cleanliness – CLARITY
There are two main types of flaws in diamonds: external flaws that can sometimes be removed by polishing, and internal flaws that cannot be removed.
The more flawless the diamond, the higher its value. Natural diamonds completely free of flaws are very rare and extremely valuable. At ALMA DIAMONDS, we recommend choosing a clarity of SI1 and above.
4. Diamond cutting – CUT
The cut of a diamond refers to the way in which the diamond reflects the light passing through it to the eyes of the observer. A professional and precise cut of a diamond gives it its unique shine, which comes straight from the heart of the diamond. The angles of the diamond’s cutting and polishing are what allow the diamond to refract the light passing through it in an ideal way.
The cuts range between
EXCELLENT – VERY GOOD – GOOD – FAIR – POOR
At ALMA DIAMONDS, the cut level is VERY GOOD or EXCELLENT.
5. The shape of the diamond – SHAPE
Round diamonds are the most popular and make up 75% of diamonds sold worldwide. They also have the most sparkle of all the shapes. The modern round diamond has 58 facets called facets, 33 at the crown (top) and 25 at the bottom. Sometimes the sparkle in a round diamond enhances the
Diamond color
Round diamonds cost more than other shapes because of their high demand.
And because of the fact that we lose more
